Located in downtown Frankfort, The Capital Plaza Hotel was built in 1984. In 1987, Governor Wallace Wilkinson bought the hotel then sold the property to Kentucky Central Life. The hotel underwent an extensive renovation in 2001.

In 2005, Stonebridge Hospitality bought the hotel and then leased the land from the state of Kentucky. The change in ownership was acknowledged with the installation of a new sign for the Capital Plaza Hotel in 2006.

Stonebridge Hospitality also owns and operates other fine hotels in Frankfort including Fairfield Inn, Hampton Inn, and the Best Western Inn.
